I am looking for a missional hero. So, of course, I’m starting with Jesus. Just about everyone says Jesus was a great person. He was a person on a mission. So, being on his mission is being ‘missional’ like Jesus.
Getting the glory or having a glorious day, what was that like for Jesus? I guess there are lots of days that were like that for Jesus so when I came across this thought in one of the biographies of Jesus written by a friend of his named John I was intrigued. It is something like: the glory of the one and only God is expressed by his Son in grace and truth.
Here is the direct quote from chapter one of John’s biography: “We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
First thing that hit me: wow, not in accomplishments, not because everyone thinks he is great, not great style or personality, not in God things like the organization of the molecule or structure of the skies and seasons….but in grace and truth, that is the key note expression of God’s glory.
So Jesus one day was talking to this woman who had up to five husbands divorce her, and was probably the laughing stock of her little town. He had this great conversation with her and really interacted with her as a person. The conversation was so great that she ran back to town and the town paid so much attention that they came out to see Jesus. That was showing grace and being truthful. I’m sure the truth hurt a bit when Jesus said, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” But he was so respectful of her that it did not seem to make her even flinch.
So, if we want to be a ‘little Jesus’ or godlike then it would not be in our accomplishments that our glory is seen but in how we treat others in grace and how we behave in and speak the truth. Graciousness, truthfulness in living, that is part of glorious living..
