The world is truly getting smaller and national boundary lines are blurring in favor of intellectual and cultural similarities. An opinion poll was run by the European Social Journal , an internet journal that addresses “issues of critical interest to progressives across Europe and beyond.” The question: Who are the thinkers with the most influence on the European left-of-centre political agenda.” So, the “Surprise Result – The most influential European Thinker is an American!”
Paul Krugman of Princeton University, New Jersey won. Now Krugman is pretty brilliant, in 2008, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for his contributions to New Trade Theory and New Economic Geography. He was voted sixth in a 2005 global poll of the world’s top 100 intellectuals by Prospect (Wikipedia).
In response Gabor Gyori wrote: “If Paul Krugman is the most influential progressive European thinker, then I think it isn’t far-fetched to say that the most powerful European progressive politician is Barack Obama (with due apologies to Zapatero).” At that, I laughed which is what Gyori wanted, I think.
